Do you know where you can go to buy fast-food? It's not the unhealthy burgers and pizza's that we are talking about. There ought to be some places where Mumbaikars go on days when they are fasting!
Famous for its 'fast-ing' cuisine, this no nonsense Maharashtrian eatery lies on the arterial road connecting Dadar and Mahim. Perpetually brimming with people and a kitchen that almost never turns down the flame, Prakash Lunch Home is famous for its fasting specialities. In the background plays typical Maharashtrian music handpicked by the owner who sits tight at the cash counter. Every other minute, a new bill is generated.
The waiters are running around wearing Gandhi topis, and couriering dishes from the open kitchen to the tables. In their front pocket is a paper menu card in two versions - Marathi and English. The pink menu card has 'Shakahari Uphar Kendra' printed in bold. Conversations on the tables are in high pitched Marathi.
And there is no proper 'lunch' available at this vegetarian eatery. There are only four categories on the menu card - snacks, hot drink, cold drink and sweet dish. It is these snacks that have a fan following all across the city. You know that you're in Prakash Lunch Home when every second order is 'Sabudana Wada.' The crispy fried wada is served piping hot with chutney and sambhar. The delicious mix of sabudana, potato, green chillies is not the only a 'fasting' speciality. Other specialities include Sabudana Khichdi, Thalipith, Watana Patis and Kothimbir Wadi.
Even though it's not a air conditioned restaurant, people make a beeline to this eatery in the peak of summer.
The cooling kesar-laden 'Piyush' is a favourite. The eatery also has sealed plastic takeaway glasses for Piyush. Sweet dishes like Doodhi halwa, Shrikhand Plate and Dink Ladu are local favourites.
Light on the stomach and affordable, Prakash Lunch Home is one of the few remaining authentic Maharashtrian eateries in Mumbai.
